How can students learn to use AI tools effectively and responsibly?


I’m a professor teaching an introductory course that requires students to use AI tools for research and writing (think ChatGPT, Bard, Perplexity AI, etc.). I’m excited about the potential, but also worried about plagiarism, over-reliance, and generally using these tools unethically or inappropriately.

What are some concrete strategies, assignments, or classroom activities that I can implement to help my students:

  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of different AI tools?
  • Develop critical thinking skills to evaluate AI-generated content?
  • Cite and attribute AI-generated content appropriately to avoid plagiarism?
  • Use AI tools as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, their own thinking and writing?
