Sunsetting the CIG Podcast A Final Conversation

300 Episodes of Podcasting: Our Biggest Lessons and the Birth of The Inforium

Every long journey reaches a significant milestone, a point where you pause, look back at the path traveled, and gaze forward to the new horizons ahead. For us, that moment is now. After 300 episodes, countless hours of conversation, and an incredible journey with all of you, the time has come to say a fond farewell to the College Info Geek Podcast.

But this isn’t an ending. It’s an evolution. We’re thrilled to announce the next chapter in our adventure: The Inforium.

To celebrate this transition, we wanted to do more than just change the name. We decided to dedicate this final episode to a deep reflection on everything we’ve learned from creating this show. Podcasting has been more than just a platform; it has been our teacher. It has shaped our perspectives on learning, productivity, personal finance, and life itself. Join us as we unpack the most valuable lessons from 300 episodes and look forward to the exciting future with The Inforium.

Lesson 1: The Unmatched Power of Consistency

If there’s one principle that has been hammered home over 300 episodes, it’s the power of consistency. Showing up, week after week, even when inspiration felt distant, is the bedrock of any long-term project. This regular practice wasn’t just about producing content; it was about building a habit of creation and, more importantly, a relationship with our audience. You knew we’d be there, and that trust is something we cherish deeply.

This journey reinforced our belief in systematic approaches to self-improvement. Just as consistent studying leads to better grades, consistent creative output leads to mastery of the craft. We’ve explored this very idea in depth, translating our experiences into practical systems for our listeners. It’s no coincidence that we’ve created courses on habit-building and productivity; these are the very skills we had to develop to make this podcast a reality.

Lesson 2: Evolution Is Essential for Growth

When we started, our focus was tightly centered on the “college” part of our name. We covered topics like how to get accepted into college and the essential skills every student should have. But as we grew, so did our audience. You graduated, started careers, and faced new challenges. Clinging to our original niche would have been a disservice to the community we built together.

Our content naturally evolved to address the questions of a modern, curious adult. We began exploring:

  • Personal Finance: We moved from basic student budgeting to complex topics like how to start investing and even the monumental task of buying your first house.
  • Advanced Productivity: We went beyond simple study tips to discuss concepts like the Hedonic Treadmill and drew inspiration from unconventional sources like video game design.
  • Deeper Life Questions: We reflected on what truly matters, discussing lessons we’d give our 18-year-old selves and exploring profound works like Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning.

This evolution is the primary reason for our rebranding. “The Inforium” represents a broader space for curiosity, a place where we can explore any topic that helps us live and learn better, without being confined to a single stage of life.

Lesson 3: The Art of Conversation and Deep Listening

Hosting a podcast taught us that speaking is only half of the equation. True communication lies in the art of the interview, the ability to ask insightful questions, and, most importantly, the practice of deep listening. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of speaking with incredible minds.

Conversations with entrepreneurs like Pat Flynn and Gary Vaynerchuk taught us about hustle, marketing, and the importance of providing value. Our discussion with former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan gave us a high-level perspective on the systems that shape our learning. Each guest brought a unique worldview that challenged our assumptions and enriched our understanding.

These interviews were a masterclass in themselves, teaching us how to build rapport, guide a conversation without railroading it, and create a space where genuine insights can emerge. This skill of active listening has transcended the podcast, improving our professional and personal relationships in countless ways.

Lesson 4: True Learning is Interdisciplinary

One of the most joyful discoveries from our podcasting journey has been seeing the connections between seemingly unrelated fields. The world isn’t divided into neat little subjects like it is in school. Real-world problem-solving requires pulling knowledge from a vast array of disciplines.

We learned about cognitive biases from the work of psychologist Daniel Kahneman in Thinking Fast and Slow and saw how they apply to marketing, personal finance, and even our daily habits. We analyzed the principles of influence and reciprocation, connecting them to building communities and professional networks. The lessons are everywhere if you know how to look for them.

This is why we’re passionate about platforms that encourage this kind of interdisciplinary learning. Our sponsors reflect this philosophy:

  • Skillshare allows you to jump from a class on productivity systems to one on Adobe Illustrator, building a unique and powerful skill stack. Their vast library empowers you to follow your curiosity wherever it leads.
  • Brilliant makes complex topics in math, science, and computer science accessible and interactive, teaching you to think critically and solve problems from first principles—a skill that applies to every area of life.

Looking Forward: What to Expect from The Inforium

So, what does the future hold? The Inforium will be a continuation of our mission, but with a renewed vision and a wider lens. We’re excited to shake up our format, bringing in more diverse writers and voices to share their expertise. We want to move beyond just our own perspectives and create a true hub of knowledge.

We’ll be experimenting with different episode styles, from deep-dive monologues and expert interviews to roundtable discussions and narrative-driven stories. The goal is to find the best possible way to explore a topic and make it engaging and useful for you. We’re inspired by creators like Wendover Productions and MKBHD who have mastered their craft and continue to innovate.

While we will miss the “College Info Geek Podcast” and the identity that came with it, we are incredibly excited about the freedom and potential that The Inforium brings. It’s a new era, and we can’t wait to embark on it with you.
